THE LEADERSHIP FELLOWS PROGRAM CURRICULUM

The curriculum is based on cultural values of spirituality, family, reflection, and community. It is designed and delivered by outstanding faculty who are leaders and teachers in the nonprofit sector from around the country.

Leadership Fellows enter the program as a cohort in August and work together for an intensive week in residence away from their offices and their homes. Thereafter, they meet monthly during the year for day-long skill building leadership development sessions and attend a winter and summer two-day retreat.

Their education and training, customized for each unique leadership Fellow class, falls into three principal categories.

Cultural Context of Leadership and Community

  • Story Telling
  • Spirituality
  • Cultural Histories
  • Finding Personal Balance: Work and Family
  • Reflection and journalism
  • Communicating Across cultures: Finding Common Ground

Leadership Development

  • Vision, Mission and Values
  • Leadership Styles and Approaches to Leadership
  • Public Speaking and Media Relations
  • Conflict Management and Negotiation
  • Governance and Board Development
  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Collaboration and Community

Nonprofit Organization Management

  • Financial Management
  • Value-Based Management and Supervision
  • Strategic Planning
  • Organizational Change and Transition Management
  • Fund Development and Grant Writing
  • Interviewing and Hiring

The Fellows develop and implement a community project as a capstone to their first year.

Second Year Option

The option to remain together as a Leadership Fellows Cohort Group for a second year, on a voluntary basis, may be available. Second year Fellows continue to meet monthly for skill building and to practice leadership skills acquired during their first year.

A significant aspect of their second year program is providing leadership and mentorship for the first year class of Fellows, Second-year Fellows facilitate discussions and provide support, encouragement and mentoring to first-year Fellows. In addition, they design and customize their own leadership experiences. Much of the second year program focuses on issues of leadership transitions, inter-organizational communications, case study development and analysis, and the challenges of leadership in practice.
